Art in 2026

How can so much change in such a short time. It seems impossible and yet ... it is real and, as hard as it is, I have to embrace these challenges and changes.

A major part of this change is the continued deterioration Iof my health, especially my tremor. I have to adapt the kind of art I make & have turned to using gouache and acrylic gouache for the first time, in bold and colourful works; if my hands jerk I can either embrace the outcome or in these media it is easy to overpaint. I am also thoroughly enjoying mixing media, using pastels of different types, watercolour, ink, felt pens and more. When I look back over how my art has shifted in style over the past 5 years I am reminded of Picasso's words:

" Painting is just another way of keeping a diary."

So very true.

Much of my work this year has been inspired by the work of Helen Wells. Helen is an advocate of sketchbooks and almost all of the work in this year's gallery has been done in sketchbooks varying from A5 to A3 in size. Working large, often in a double A3 spread, means I can create lines by moving my shoulder and whole arm, rather than just my hand; it helps even out the shakes and jerks, sometimes!

I have also started doing a lot of fine line work. This is fantastic therapy as it takes a great deal of focus and persistence! The lines are wiggly and I am embracing the shakes!

As always, my art is for me; if it gives others pleasure too, that is wonderful. I hope it makes them think, too. Shared here is a tiny representation of my current work...I will change them now and them to keep them current.

Colourful Flowers Gouache & acrylic paint markers on A4 watercolour paper. Inspired by the work of Suzanne Allard.	Bold & Beautiful Watercolour, pastel & acrylic ink, A4 collage. I love bold & bright colours. Especially the jewel ones. I did this on a day when I felt all over the place. I took to an old watercolour piece with my scissors, got sticking and before I knew it a pleasurable hour had passed by.
Playtime A5 mixed media, messing around. Bits I like, bits I don't - all to inspire future creations.	In The Blue Mixed media in A3 sketchbook. When my hands are shaky I find this kind of work rewarding accuracy and mistakes don't matter.

An Explosion of Colour Mixed media, double A3 spread. I had no idea where I was going when I started this. When I finished it I didn't like it but, hey ho, you can't like everything you make! 4 weeks later I was flicking back through my s/bk and thought, wow, I love that!	Flowers in the Pink! Mixed media in A3 sketchbook. The sense of achievement from this bold, naive work is phenomenal. That's important, at any time, especially now.
An African Spin on the Pink theme! Mixed media in an A3 sketchbook. My mind wandered back to my days living in Africa when I created this.	Purple Flowers & Fine Lines A4 sketchbook; watercolour, watercolour marker and ink brush pen. Oh those fine lines...all wonky & embracing the shakes!
Embracing the shakes .. again! A4 sketchbook - my A4 & A5 sketchbooks are made from recycled coffee cups. Only 140gsm but the paper takes a lot of water. A great sense of pleasure gained from this piece, like most of the art I create. I do enjoy it.	In The Pink...again! A dear friend of mine, sadly now departed from this earth, always called me the 'Pink Lady'; no reasons for guessing why. A4 watercolour brush pen & ink.
Meditation One of many pieces inspired by Helen Wells. So calming to do. Double A3 spread using refillable pens - a Tom's Studio Lumos and a Pentel brush pen, both with Platinum Carbon ink - very black & waterproof. Art like this is new to me & I have fallen in love with it.	Flowers & Leaves A4 doodle using watercolour brush pen, a refillable liner and brush pens with black ink (always used for these pens, & my fountain pens).
Woven A3 double sketchbook spread, mixed media. These pieces take several hours due to all the breaks I have to take. So rewarding.	Black is Beautiful Another double A3 spread. How my mind wonders and wanders when I do these pieces.
Sunburst A3 sketchbook, mixed media. I was feeling glum on the day I did this hence the yellow!	Vessel A3 sketchbook...just fancied colouring in. reminded me of my childhood.
Tree of Life Double A3 sketchbook spread using cheap double-ended felt pens I bought just before we went into the 1st lockdown in March 2020. The pages of this sketchbook are super smooth & using the felt pens was an absolute delight. I so enjoyed making this piece.	I Felt The Need For ...Purple! Double A3 mixed media spread. I just had to include purple!
Out In The Wild Or, en plein air. I love sketching outside. This little sketchbook & even smaller pen are usually I my pocket. I love taking photographs of things in Nature, as well as sketching. Inspiration for art.	The Wonder of Watercolour I adore watercolour. I love its unpredictability, its caprisciousness. This is an A4 art board with 4 shades of watercolour paint on, very wet in wet, and then as it was drying I splattered it with water. I will use it as a background for gold, black & white embellishments. Or I may leave it just as it is!
